I couldn’t bear to watch. It was bad enough to feel it the way only I could. Watching it was just too much. I turned away and squeezed my eyes shut until the soldier’s screams finally went quiet.

While the Tibran soldiers unfastened their dead comrade’s limp body and dragged him down from the chair, Hilleddi began prowling down our line again. There was a fresh smirk on her lips as she sized each one of us up from head to foot, like she was selecting fruit from the market.

“The Mirror cannot be fooled. It is indifferent to crowns and kingdoms. Tell the truth, and it will release you. Tell a lie, and even if you don’t know it’s a lie, it won’t matter. All the Mirror cares about is whether the words that leave your lips are true or not. But perhaps you think you’ll give me no answer at all and that will save you.” She hummed as she pulled a long, curved dagger from her belt and began flipping it in the air, tossing and catching it by the hilt every time. “Getting men to talk is my specialty. It’s my favorite game. So the only real question is who looks the most princely, even in those tacky savage clothes?”

Down the line, I saw Aubren’s head loll forward. His eyelids flickered and he started to groan. He was finally waking up.

And Hilleddi was walking straight toward him.

I didn’t know how much Aubren understood about our situation. Obviously, it wasn’t good. But as he drowsily sat up and looked at all of us, the Tibran death machine, and the already deceased soldier, I saw realization dawn on his face.

“Come on, little prince. We don’t have all day. My brother grows impatient quickly. I tell you what, if the real prince is the first to step forward and reveal himself, then I will honor his show of courage and let the rest of you live.”

She didn’t have to be strapped to that stupid mirror for me to know she was lying. I seriously doubted any of us was going to be walking out of here alive if she had anything to do with it.

But I saw Aubren start to open his mouth. What choice did he have? If there was any chance he could save the rest of us, that idiot was going to take it.

“It’s me!” I shouted suddenly. “I’m Aubren, Prince of Maldobar!”

Everyone stopped to stare at me.

Hilleddi’s smile bloomed with wicked delight, as though she somehow knew I was lying and was just thrilled at the idea of using her favorite killing toy again. She made her way back to me slowly. Looming over me, she reached around to grab my long red braid and brought the end of it up to her nose. She took a few long sniffs and her eyes crinkled in the corners as her grin widened.

“Say it again, boy.”

I clenched my hands into fists against the shackles. “Why? Did I stutter the first time?”

“Strange, I was expecting someone older.
